Common Locations That You Can Find a Defibrillator

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Defibrillators are becoming more and more common in public places. The ones that they have now are called Automated External Defibrillators or AEDs. They are exactly what the name says, automated. The user does not need all of the training that the older manual ones require. It is recommended that you take the classes to learn what the right way is to use them because it will be a lot easier to react in the event of an emergency. Someone with no training can use these because they have voice instructions that you listen to instead of having to either know what to do or read the instructions. Life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias are automatically diagnosed and it attempts to stop it by using defibrillation.

One obvious location of these defibrillators is in a hospital. This is probably the most common place to find one. They are in the Emergency Department, along with operating rooms and several other places throughout the hospital.

Another common place to find one is in an ambulance. This is a very important part of their rescue operations. They get a lot of calls for people with heart attacks and chest pains. In an emergency, they are the most crucial part of the rescue for this type of call.

A lot of doctors’ offices also have these, especially cardiologists. There are others that have them also. Nursing homes is also a very common place to find a defibrillator. Most of the people in a nursing home are either elderly or have some type of medical condition.

They are also found in airports and on the planes. They are put in places where they can be reached right away. People with heart problems fly also and many people have a fear of flying. They react in different ways. Stress can play a big role in heart problems.

Another place where it is a good idea to have a defibrillator is at gyms or sports arenas. People are going there to get into shape or to lose weight. Sometimes they tend to take it too far and push themselves too much. Every time you exercise you are getting your heart rate up and if you have something wrong with your heart, it can cause you to have chest pains or a heart attack.

A lot of Federal buildings also have these in them. They are there for safety just in case something happens. Some schools and universities also have defibrillators. There was a grant available for them to put these in the schools. NASA also has these in the space shuttles. You never know what can happen in space. All of the Automated External Defibrillators are battery operated so they are very portable.

There are many other places where you can find defibrillators. They are very common in any public places. Some common places inside the buildings to find them are in restrooms, elevators, lobbies, cafeterias and at security centers. In some places, they are trying to get them so that they are just as common as a fire extinguisher.

Defibrillator Placement Just As Important as Defibrillator Availability

According to two recent studies published Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, suggests that placement of defibrillators is just as important as having them readily available.

Defibrillators save lives, there is no arguing that fact! They can be used to resuscitate victims of cardiac arrest successfully and it is estimated that they could save tens of thousands of American Lives each year if they were readily available. But what happens when they are available but not easily accessible?

Researchers found 83% of the US high schools surveyed with AED programs (1710) had some sort of plan in place for emergency response for sudden cardiac arrest, but only 40% actually practiced and review their plans at least once a year. Last year there were 36 cases of cardiac arrest at the same 1710 high schools. Studies found that over those 36 cases, 83% received an AED shock. Schools actually fare better than other defibrillator installations.

There is a growing need for CPR training and Smart AED Deployment in urban environments. Finding the best possible locations for defibrillator placement is just as important as having defibrillators deployed.
