Automated External Defibrillators or AEDs are portable electronic devices that are used to diagnose and treat cardiac arrhythmias, irregular electrical activity in the heart, or cardiac arrests, lack of a pulse or heartbeat. AEDs deliver a dose of electricity to the heart neatralizing the arrhythmia in order to restore a normal rhythm. They are designed to be a more easy to use portable version of the live-saving defibrillator machines seen operating in hospitals. Often they are so simple they can be used with little to no training. This technology was pioneered by MedTronic Physio Control nearly 50 years ago. Currently 9 of the top 10 emergency medical response services are using LifePak devices and more than 350,000 LifePak AED units have been distributed.

The Lifepak 500 DPS is a defibrillator intended for both in hospital and out of the hospital use. It is also designed to be operable with the minimum of training and medical expertise pairing to make it the superior choice for both Emergency medical services such as paramedics, firefighters and even police officers. The Lifepak 500 DPS was designed to be easy to use, which means you need minimal training to be able to use this device to save lives in an emergency situation. In an emergency involving cardiac arrest, police officers and fire fighters are often first on the scene, arriving before the paramedics do. With the easy to use interface the unit tells the operator exactly what to do next with clear visual and voice commands. The Lifepak 500 DPS is completely compatible with the range of LifePak monitors and accessories that are used by over 80% of emergency medical professionals today.

Lifepak 500 DPS is also the ideal choice for many college and university campus, and more and more AED units are appearing in public facilities these days. Because the Lifepak 500 DPS is so easy to operate and is compatible with so many devices, many public facilities are equipping themselves with the same devices used in their local hospitals, firetrucks and emergency response units.

Roughly 450,000 Americans are killed each year by sudden cardiac arrest. That is more than the rate of suicides, homicides, deaths related to drug abuse and car accidents combined. The survival rate is about 5% but it is estimated that nearly 70% of victims of sudden cardiac arrest could be saved with the aid of a defibrillator. In most of these cases, if the victim received proper treatment from a defibrillator in three minutes or less, lives could be saved. However, medical emergencies do not happen in convenient locations. Many of them happen under difficult or even dangerous circumstances. The Lifepak 500 DPS has been designed to meet the need for tough equipment for public safety, law enforcement, underground mining operations or helicopter use. This device has been tested to military specifications and is ideal for use at high altitudes, able to withstand shock, vibration and dust.

In many medical emergencies of sudden cardiac arrests officers who are first to respond can do little more than wait for the ambulance to arrive. With an easy to use and rugged Lifepak 500 DPS, designed for use with minimal training, they can do more. Thousands of lives can be saved by swift action in the most extreme circumstances. The LifePak is designed to operate at altitudes of up to 15,000 feet and as low as -2,000 feet. It is built to withstand high vibration levels and can resist damage from dust, salt and fog.

The electrode pads used by the LIFEPAK 500 DPS can be used for defibrillation and pacing as well as reading electrical activity (ECG) with the LIFEPAK 12 monitor. Other pads may need to be disconnected and replaced with compatible ones, this saves valuable seconds when they really count. It also uses the latest in ADAPTIV™ biphasic technology allowing it to adjust and adapt to the victim’s needs in order to restore a normal heart rhythm. By adjusting the amount of current it uses, the Lifepak 500 DPS is able to maximise the chances of saving a life in a cardiac arrest situation. The Lifepak 500 DPS is also incredibly easy to maintain as it runs daily automated tests and has long lasting batteries to ensure that only minimal maintenance and upkeep is required. It also has the ability to record, store and transmit vital patient and event data.

When a person suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, they need to be treated with shock from an AED within three minutes to maximise their chances of survival. That is why the nearest defibrillator must be close at hand. The more readily available and easy to use these devices, the less we will be losing lives to one of the most widespread and preventable causes of death. The best possible solution is to equip all public safety personnel and facilities with AED devices to decrease the risk of a sudden cardiac arrest victim going untreated for too long. But not all public facility workers are able to be trained for emergency medical procedures. The Lifepak 500 DPS allows even the lay person to use its’ life saving technology and effectively shock a patients heart back into a normal rhythm.
